Hyde Hall is located amongst rolling hills with fantastic panoramic views. This 360-acre estate is constantly evolving as the garden team strive to retain the original intimacy and charm of this horticultural gem, while as the same time aiming to restore much of the estate to its former rural glory, including historic hedgerows and woodlands. Three Gardens in Northampton and Oxfordshire We’ll spend the morning at Evenley Wood Gardens. Set amongst the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, this 60-acre privately owned woodland garden contains a large and notable collection of plants; ranging from unusual trees and shrubs to a wide selection of lilies and other bulbs. The garden’s unusual band of acid soil, in this otherwise predominantly alkaline area, provides the opportunity to cultivate plants such as rhododendrons, camellias, and magnolias, which would not ordinarily thrive in this location. The head gardener will give us an hour’s tour followed by time to wander by yourself and then an optional lunch at £12 per head (confirm at time of booking) or bring a picnic. For further information go to https://www.evenleywoodgarden.co.uk/the-garden/ We then move on to two gardens - Manor House and Breach House – within Wheatley Gardens. Breach House Gardens cover 1 acre with a coppiced hazel wood walk and extensive shrubs and perennials. It also includes a more contemporary reflective space with a wild pond and a long grass paddock with mowed path. Manor House is a 1½ acre garden of an Elizabethan manor house (not open). It includes a formal box walk, herb garden, cottage garden with rose arches and a shrubbery with old roses. A romantic oasis in this busy village. The visit includes tea/coffee/biscuits before we head home. For further information go to https://www.ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/garden/20179/ (we will not be visiting The Studio). The cost for this outing will be £30 for members (£35 for guests and non-members) which covers, entrance to gardens, tea/coffee/biscuits at Wheatley, coach and driver’s gratuity. Please bring a picnic lunch or opt for the lunch at an additional £12.00 Depart Chalfont St Giles Village Green at 9.30 am. Depart Wheatley at approx 4pm. |
