Two Gardens in Surrey
Thursday 25th May, 2017 In the morning, we visited The Coach House, Chiddingfold, GU8 4TU. This is a designer’s garden comprising 1 acre walled garden and additional courtyards, designed by the owners and created since 2013. We had a talk by the owner and tea/coffee and biscuits. We also had our picnic lunch here. In the afternoon, we visited Vann, Hambledon, Nr Godalming. GU8 4EF. This internationally known 5 acre garden is formed by a series of rooms which surround and complement a family home dating from the 16th C. From the old Cottage Garden to the robust pergola of Bargate stone by W D Caroe, the Arts and Crafts architect and grandfather of the present owners, to the Water Garden laid out and planted by Gertrude Jeykell in 1911, and the newly planted Centenary Garden, Vann is inspirational and 2* listed by English Heritage. Daylesford House, GL56 0LG, near Chipping Camden
Wednesday 28th June 2017 In the morning we visited a small garden nearby to complement our visit to Daylesford in the afternoon. The home of Lord and Lady Bamford (of JCB fame) Daylesford is a grade II* listed garden with a remarkable orangery in the Gothic style, landscaped gardens, statuary, 2 lakes, rose garden and pottager, a walled garden with an orchid and a peach house, shell grotto and a topiary elephant! Farley Hill Place

Farley Hill Place Gardens, Berkshire and West Silchester Hall, Hampshire. Monday 10th July, 2017 In the morning we visited Farley Hill Place Gardens, Church Road, Farley Hill, Berks RG7 1TZ. 4 acre, C18th cottage garden with year round interest and colour. 1.5acre walled garden, well stocked herbaceous borders, productive vegetable areas with herb garden, glorious dahlia and cutting flower beds. Victorian glasshouse and small nursery. Plants, cut flowers and produce for sale. We had tea/coffee and pastries and an introductory talk by the owner. In the afternoon we will visit West Silchester Hall, Bramley Road, Silchester, Hants RG7 2LX This 2 acre garden has fascinating colour combinations inspired by the artist owner. Spectacular herbaceous borders with rare and unusual plants flowering over a long period. Interesting pots with half-hardy plants, wild garden with natural pond, kitchen garden with view. There is also a Studio exhibition of the owner’s botanical, landscape and portrait paintings, cards and gifts, for which she has received many awards. Rousham, Oxfordshire
Wednesday 9th August, 2017 Rousham House and Gardens OX25 4QX. In March, speaker Steven Harmer recommended this garden, (Monty Don raved about it!) and we are delighted to have arranged a visit to this beautiful garden. We first had a guided tour of the house itself, a Jacobean building with Georgian remodeling, described by architect and historian Nicolas Pevsner, as having a parlour that is “one of the most exquisite 18th Century small rooms in England”. We were then free to explore one of the few 18th Century gardens designed by William Kent to have escaped alteration. He also designed some interiors of the house. Overlooking the River Cherwell, we found ponds and cascades in Venus’s Vale, a Cold Bath and many fascinating features and sculptures. In the distance we saw a sham ruin, designed to be picturesque, called The Eyecatcher. There is a splendid walled garden, herbaceous borders with glorious dahlia displays, a small parterre, a pigeon house and espaliered apple trees to mention but a few of the delights awaiting you. There is a the herd of Long-horn cattle in the Park too. In the afternoon we visited Red Kites, Bedlow Ridge, HP14 4JJ. This 1.5 acre garden is planted for year-round interest with mixed and herbaceous borders, wild flower orchard, pond, vegetable garden, woodland area and hidden garden. |
