Outings for 2021:

Wednesday, 13th October, 2021 - RHS Wisley, Taste of Autumn

Picture
One of benefits the Gardens Association enjoys from being affiliated to the RHS is a free group visit to Wisley. As well as enjoying the most beautiful gardens, which have been substantially remodelled since out last visit, our outing this year is timed to coincide with the RHS Taste of Autumn, when you will be able to see live cookery demonstrations at the kitchen theatre inside the new RHS Hilltop, browse seasonal produce and taste tempting treats from over 30 food stands. Additionally, you will be able to receive expert advice from the RHS Edibles team, so you can grow your own. Click here for details of the event, stall holders, etc.

Booking details

As entry is free, we’ve provisionally booked a guided tour of the gardens and a cream tea which will incur an additional cost but these will be optional and dependent on a minimum number.

The cost for entrance to RHS Wisley, coach travel and driver’s gratuity is £13.00 for CSGGA Members and £18.00 for their guests. Then, there is the option of the tour at £3.00 per person and a cream tea at £6.50 per person.

Please make your own arrangements for refreshments, you will find there are plenty of restaurants and cafes around Wisley and you can also enjoy the samples and titbits as the Taste of Autumn stands. Come dressed for the weather and walking!

Timings

Christmas Market and Winter Lights at Waddesdon  -  Thursday, 2nd December, 2021

Picture

Following the popularity of our previous Christmas outings, we have planned one to Waddesdon this December.  The Christmas market stalls are housed in wooden chalets, offering a variety of high-quality gifts, decorations, crafts and festive food. Then, at dusk, we can follow the Winter Light Trail and see the gardens awash with colour and dazzling light displays. Note: the house will not be open, only the grounds.

Booking Details

The costs for this outing are complicated! The entrance to Waddesdon ground, coach travel and driver’s gratuity is £15.00 for CSGGA Members and £18.00 for their guests.  For those who are not members of the National Trust there is an additional charge of £10.00.  Then, there is the option of a shuttle bus for and additional £2.00 – free for blue badge holders – I have booked a limited number of places so cannot and these will be prioritised according to need.

Please make your own arrangements for refreshments, you will find there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy winter food and drink and come dressed for the weather and walking!

Timings

  • Departing Chalfont St Giles Village Green at 13.00 – please be there by 12.55 for arrival at Waddesdon before 14.00 approx
  • Departing Waddesdon at 18.00
  • Approximate arrival at Chalfont St Giles at 18.45 – 19.00

Accessibility

It is a bit of a stroll from the coach park to the House and Christmas Market, so I have reserved a number of places for the shuttle bus for those who might need it – priority will be given to those with blue badges.  I understand that the buses are fully accessible; each bus has ramps and dedicated space for wheelchairs. Buses run from the car park to the North Fountain, returning via the Stables and back to the car park. There is an additional charge of £2.00 for the shuttle bus - it is free for blue badge holders. If you are a blue badge holder, please tick the appropriate box on the booking form.

Thursday, 19th August, 2021 - Capel Manor Gardens and Beth Chatto’s Garden

Picture
Capel Manor Gardens, Enfield
Capel Manor Gardens boasts more than 60 themed gardens and landscapes. These include winning gardens from previous RHS Chelsea Flower Shows, as well as model front and back gardens and a recycled garden. Highlights include the Walled Garden, historical gardens, woodland walk and maze.

Beth Chatto OBE was an award-winning plants woman, author and lecturer. She took an overgrown wasteland of brambles, parched gravel and boggy ditches, transforming it using plants adapted by nature to thrive in different conditions: ‘right plant, right place’. An inspirational, informal garden has been developed over the years.

There are five main areas in the garden, all dealing with challenging soils and aspects - Gravel Garden, Water Garden, Reservoir Garden, Woodland Garden and the Scree Garden. Beth's is a garden for plant lovers and whilst it's not the biggest, at around 7 acres, it is beautiful.
