9th January: WILDLIFE IN YOUR GARDEN - Dr Stephen Head Stephen has spent his career as a leading ecologist lecturing at Oxford. he has a particular interest in gardening and helping people at every level to understand the importance of garden wildlife both for its biodiversity importance and its value for people.
13th February: THE SUBTLE ART AND EXACT SCIENCE OF PRUNING - Tim Walker For many people pruning is as bewildering as potions were to the young Harry Potter but armed with the 10 principles in this talk you will never fear pruning again. In addition to these principles I look at the various classes of pruning with many examples of trees & shrubs commonly found in gardens.
13th March: GROWING SWEET PEAS - Katherine Woods Katherine will share hints and tips for growing great straight-stemmed sweet peas to cut for the home, including sumptuous photos of some favourite varieties.
10th April: SPRING SHOW
Always a highlight of the year for members with a bit of friendly competition between amateur growers. The show offers the chance to show off your daffodils, rhubarb, houseplant or any other plant for that matter!
8th May: THE FORGOTTEN GARDENS OF THE 19TH CENTUARY - Francesca Murray Francesca Murray, garden historian and volunteer Archivist of Perennial, previously the Gardeners Benevolent Fund) will explain its fascinating history of the charity and the forgotten gardeners and the families that it gave financial assistance to.
12th June - PLANTS FOR PROBLEM PLACES - Geoff Hodge
Some gardens or parts of the garden are a bit trickier to choose suitable plants for, or can provide you with “opportunities” to grow different plants; we never have “problems” in gardening! This illustrated talk addresses various problem places gardeners have and how to overcome them.
10th July: WHY GARDEN? - Ann Luder
Ann’s talk will include a little bit of history, geography, psychology and a sprinkling of humour on our need to impact on our environment.
14th August: GARDEN VISIT TO CHURCH GARDENS, HAREFIELD A hidden gem situated on the outskirts of Harefield village, the walled gardens have been drawn back from the brink of dereliction by Kay and Patrick McHugh, who first discovered them in 1995. For over 25 years, the family have devoted all of their spare time to restoring Church Gardens.
11th September: HOW TO PROPAGATE AND GROW PEONIES - Alec White
Alec is the owner of Primrose Hall Peonies, an RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal award-winning British specialist peony nursery. Alec will share his passion for these beautiful plants, explaining propagation techniques and breeding, giving advice on choosing the perfect peony and how to care for and maintain them
9th October:AGM and Members Autumn Show
Bring along your dahlias, apples and pot plants and enter into a little light-hearted garden rivalry!
13th November: GROWING AND CARING FOR ROSES - Kerry Austin Kerry is a horticulturist with a passion for roses. She previously worked at the Gardens of the Rose and Wisley. She is the current Team Leader and Head Gardener for the Rochfords International Rose Trials.
11th December - Christmas Party
Our annual Christmas party gives us an opportunity to reflect on the year and share the evening with friends and fellow gardeners. A seasonal dinner will form part of the evening, together with quizzes and a raffle.
