The lesson I have thoroughly learnt, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives. Gertrude Jekyll

Weds 9th August - Rousham House and Gardens OX25 4QX
In March, speaker Steven Harmer recommended this garden, (Monty Don raved about it!) and we are delighted to have arranged a visit to this beautiful garden. We will first have a guided tour of the house itself, a Jacobean building with Georgian remodeling, described by architect and historian Nicolas Pevsner, as having a parlour that is “one of the most exquisite 18th Century small rooms in England”. You are then free to explore one of the few 18th Century gardens designed by William Kent to have escaped alteration. He also designed some interiors of the house. Overlooking the River Cherwell, you will find ponds and cascades in Venus’s Vale, a Cold Bath (you don’t have to try it!) and many fascinating features and sculptures. In the distance you can see a sham ruin, designed to be picturesque, called The Eyecatcher. There is a splendid walled garden, herbaceous borders with glorious dahlia displays, a small parterre, a pigeon house and espaliered apple trees to mention but a few of the delights awaiting you. You may glimpse the herd of Long-horn cattle in the Park too. There is no shop or tea room, so a picnic will be required, and also bring your choice of morning refreshments. Both the house and gardens have been used in films and on television. Simply not to be missed!
In the afternoon we visit Red Kites, Bedlow Ridge, HP14 4JJ. This 1.5 acre garden is planted for year-round interest with mixed and herbaceous borders, wild flower orchard, pond, vegetable garden, woodland area and hidden garden. We will have tea and home-made cake here.
The cost of this outing is £33 per head for members, to include fees, guided tour, coach, gratuity and afternoon tea. Please bring a picnic lunch and morning refreshments.
Departs Village Green at 9am prompt, and leave Red Kites approx. 4pm.
